There's word today that supermarket chains Kroger and Safeway are ending a rebate program that was setup to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags to the store. Stores save money when customers use their own bags, but the rebates apparently weren't encouraging enough.
The reusable bags are a little tougher to work with than the traditional plastic bag and I'll admit to feeling a little bad for the baggers as I watch them wrestle with our flabby canvas bags. We'll keep using them though, with or without a rebate. We already have enough plastic bag.
Meanwhile, North Carolina has joined Virginia in a plastic bag recycling program. The website, www.ABagsLife.com, will help you find a place for plastic bag recycling. Most of the grocery stores in my area have bag recycling collection containers.
